Santa Elena - in the Canopy

The town of Santa Elena is situated in the middle of an ecologists dream. The town has numerous natural parks and reserves in close proximity. The region is located on Costa Rica's central plateau and gets interesting weather as a result. The entire area is basically lush rain forest making for some great chances to get into nature.

Before doing any serious hiking around the parks, the best word of mouth revolved around the various canopy tours in the area. Some of these had you climbing trees, observing nature from on high, and walking across rope suspension bridges. Then there the tours that were flat out rides through the trees. I opted for the latter. I spent 3 hours zipping through the tree tops - total exhilaration.
