Cabo Blanco

Close to Montezuma, at the southern most tip of the peninsula, was the Cabo Blanco Natural Preserve. It was originally a piece of private property that was donated as a park. It is home to a large primary forest, an unspoiled beach, Iguanas, Large Rodents and a whole lot of monkeys.

To get to the beach you have to hike 5k through the forest in basically a straight line. About two thirds of the way there we came across a monkey in a tree who was pretty curious. As we stopped to check this guy out a whole troop of his friends and family showed up. There were many of these guys (at least twenty) in the surrounding trees and some of them ventured quite close. On the way out, near sunset, we heard the calls of howler monkeys. These calls are more akin to a deep guttural groan and are quite loud and sinister. The calls would start in the distance and seemingly grow closer, as if in a wave, as monkeys in nearby trees joined in. The experience of it was quite chilling.
